Q&A with John Moffatt
Meet John Moffatt, Associate Director of Global Category Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) at Apotex. He leads a team that manages Supplier Relationship Management for direct and indirect procurement. They strategically plan and systematically manage interactions with our suppliers with a goal of maximizing value.
We asked John about his experience at Apotex and the team he leads.
Describe your journey with the Apotex team.
I joined Apotex almost 10 years ago as a Sourcing Manager on the Indirect Procurement team focusing on IT, utilities and logistics. After that I became a Procurement Manager, and now I am the Associate Director of Global Category Supplier Relationship Management.
When I joined the Supplier Relationship Management team it was new to Apotex. It was an exciting time to join this team as we created the strategy and direction for our supplier relationships. We work with suppliers to systematically manage our interactions with the goal of maximizing value for the organization. We focus on ensuring our suppliers are complying with their deliverables to Apotex and identify continuous improvement opportunities to ensyre Apotex gets the most value as possible out of our key supplier relationships.
How does your role connect to our overall purpose of Improving access to medicines for millions of patients worldwide by providing affordable, innovative, and high-quality solutions each day?
My team and I are focused ensuring our products can be made at the lowest cost possible in order to be able to provide patients with affordable medicines.
Our work with suppliers to identify continuous improvement opportunities supports Apotex from an innovation standpoint. We want to get to a point that when a supplier has a new gadget or service, we are their first call to consider it and how it may help further our goal to create value.
What inspired you to join the Apotex team? What has influenced you to stay for almost 10 years?
I wanted to join a company that allowed me to grow in my role and use the skills I had, while being challenged. When I joined, we were a young and growing team.
If I had to pick one thing that’s influenced me to stay, I would say it’s the people. They care about you on a personal and professional level and want to see you succeed.
How is your team continuing to collaborate during COVID-19?
I know a lot people, myself included that miss the day-to-day interactions with people. We have a team touchpoint once a week to talk about our personal lives and check-in with each other.
What type of roles are you looking to fill on your team?
We are looking to fill a Supplier Relationship Management Specialist role. The potential candidate would be responsible for engaging with suppliers to ensure that contract value is fully realized and maximum value is derived from supplier relationships.
What do you enjoy most about working at Apotex each day?
I enjoy the fact that there is never a dull moment and that I am able to take on new challenges. Our work is always evolving with new opportunities.
As a leader, what qualities do you look for in team members or potential candidates?
Someone who is a self-starter and can run with an opportunity. It is important to have someone that can contribute to the various goals of the Supplier Relationship Management and greater Procurement team aswell as someone who is personable and flexible because the team interacts with many departments and manages multiple projects at the same time.
What would you say to candidates who are considering applying for a new role at Apotex during COVID-19?
I would encourage people to apply to Apotex, I know people might be nervous to make a change during a pandemic, but our products are in demand and we are an essential business that is continuing to grow.
