How One Apotex Employee Went from Custodian to Apprentice

Meet Max Castellano-Lopez. He has worked at Apotex for four years and started in a contract role as a Custodian in the Sanitation Department. With his natural drive and work ethic, he secured an Apprenticeship in Mechanical Maintenance.

While studying at Humber College, Max was seeking a flexible work environment and that’s when he came across a job posting at Apotex. With an interest in helping support the health and wellness of others, Max thought it was a great fit.

“When I was in the Sanitation Department, I was given the opportunity to be a department compliance coordinator. This allowed me to work side-by-side with many cross-functional departments, expand my skillsets and network,” said Max “For those looking to build a career, Apotex offers opportunities for people at all levels and stages of their career journey. In my time with the company I have been able to grow from a contractor into a permanent role that I am passionate about and I can still see further career development in the future.”

Through having conversations and asking people about their roles, Max was able to build connections that helped him learn about the business and understand different roles within the company and leave a positive impression. He also learned about potential future roles for himself and explored his areas of interest by learning about the qualifications required for specific roles in an effort to prepare himself for future opportunities. During his time at Apotex, Max has also been a Maintenance Technician while he attended HVAC courses and pursued his Gas Fitter 2 license.

“Apotex has helped me a lot. My managers have consistently encouraged and been invested in my personal and professional development. In my experience, anytime I wanted to explore and learn they have supported and encouraged me to do so and enabled me with tools to support these opportunities,” said Max.

Once he finishes his 4-year apprenticeship, Max’s goal is to stay at Apotex. He hopes to one day train apprentices, just like himself and provide them with the guidance and knowledge he has gained. Similar to when he first started, he looks forward to coming to work every day, knowing he is supporting an essential business that makes an impact on millions of lives around the world.
