Unused, unneeded medication is a growing concern. Increasingly the public has linked unused medications and its disposal to environmental concerns and medication abuse and misuse by teens is growing. In order to address these issues, the National Community Pharmacist Association (NCPA) has developed a medication return program thru its member community pharmacies.

Supported with a $10,000 grant from Apotex Corp., this ongoing initiative will help to build public awareness of the medication return program, direct citizens to participating pharmacies for medication disposal via "zip locator" on the www.disposemymeds.org website, and analyze patient questionnaires completed when unused medicines are returned.

This program, which is expected to involve over 1,000 NCPA community pharmacies by year-end, was launched during Earth Week in April, 2010.
